“What do you wish most to know?”

I fidgeted under the gorgeous gaze of an angel who had once been my father’s companion. “Did my father become human for my mother or because his soul was corrupted?”

She hummed lightly and eased forward with a cup held in both hands. “That’s a difficult question to answer. Your father discarded his wings, but not for your mother and not for the corruption of his soul. Yes, he felt responsible for her, and yes he appeased his tainted soul by discarding his angel wings, but...” She inhaled a small breath. “The reason he became human was much simpler.”

I waited with bated breath as the woman who was one of the most gorgeous creatures I’d ever seen struggled with what to say next.

“He did it for you.”

“Me?”

“Your conception was unprecedented and understandably unexpected. The corruption of his soul encouraged the event of it, if you gather my meaning, and your father’s deepest wish was to protect you. But with his corruption growing, he had no other choice but to do so as human.”

I swallowed, unable to digest it all. “And when he went away?”

“He and I remained in contact. What would ultimately lead to his death was everything to do with a connection he shared with Asmodeus.” I stayed silent. “Asmodeus was once an angel,” she said in a low voice, one that I almost missed. “He is your father’s brother.”

What?! As in, my uncle? Gross.

“Does Cain know?”

“He doesn’t,” she said, eyeing the door. It was clear now why she ensured we were alone and the muted barrier was in place. “For reasons, he must never be told.”

Could I possibly keep it from him?

Nessa set down her cup and reached for me. “I won’t force you to keep it to yourself, but I’d advise against disclosing it to him. At least right now. With your relationship what it is, it would destroy Cain. You must understand that even your father kept it from Cain because he knew what it would do to their relationship. While Cain may forgive the blood relation, we can’t know how it might affect him. Because, if the connection was discovered, Cain may equate his family’s death because of your father’s connection to his mother. It was, after all, the very reason Asmodeus knew of her existence. Every angel corrupted or killed by Asmodeus...your father was always the common denominator, and he carried that burden for a long time.”

Was that the reason he took Cain as his own?

As if hearing my thoughts, Nessa went on, “Cain may think the reason Samuel’s took care of him was because guilt. That’s why your father never said anything. More than anger, more than disgust, Samuel feared Cain would think all his actions were because of guilt and not out of genuine love. And the longer he kept it a secret, the harder it was to disclose it.”

“Aren’t you afraid he’ll find out and resent you for keeping it from him?”

“I do,” she replied candidly.
